Exercise Tolerance Testing (Exercise Challenge Test)

An exercise tolerance test is performed to evaluate symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, tightness, shortness of breath or poor performance with exercise.

Typically, a baseline spirometry and pulse oximetry are done and then exercise is performed either to achieve symptoms or to hit a specific target heart rate. Spirometry and oximetry are then performed at 5-minute intervals for 30 minutes looking for specific changes in the airflow pattern as well as rate of recovery. Once a diagnosis of exercise induced bronchospasm is determined, a medication and exercise program can be designed to relieve the symptoms.
