Pulse Oximetry
Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive procedure done in the office to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood by using specialized red and infrared light-emitting diodes. These lights are in opposite ends of a small plastic device that is attached to a finger (or ear lobe or toe). The instrument calculates absorption rates of the light and then is computed to give an oxygen saturation level. This is a highly accurate test that can be used in all ages. Determination of the oxygen level is a critical component in assessing asthma control.
